Our process
We start with the grade and the forms, because that is what decides whether the finished slab drains and stays flat. We set the forms to the right slope, prep and compact the sub-grade, and set rebar or mesh where the slab needs it.

Why San Antonio slabs crack, and how we stop it
A lot of the ground across the San Antonio metro is expansive clay. When it rains, the clay takes on water and swells. When it dries out in the summer, it shrinks and pulls back. A concrete slab sitting on top of that is being pushed and pulled the whole time, and concrete that was poured without reinforcement or control joints has no way to handle it. So it cracks, usually right across the middle where you will see it.
We build the slab to live with that movement. We compact and grade the sub-base so it is stable and drains, place rebar or mesh so the slab holds together, and cut control joints at planned spacing so the concrete cracks along a clean line down in the joint where you will never notice it. A slab is going to move. The difference is whether it cracks where we tell it to or where you have to look at it.
Finish and drainage, done for how you use it
The finish on concrete is about grip and drainage as much as looks. A driveway or a ramp gets a broom finish so it grips when wet. A patio can take a smoother finish, since it never carries vehicle traffic. We match the finish to how the slab gets used.
Drainage is the other half. A slab has to be poured with a slight slope so water sheds off it rather than pooling on it or running back toward the house. Standing water on concrete finds every weak spot over time, and water sent the wrong way pushes rain at a foundation. We set the slope when we form the slab, before a drop of concrete is poured, because drainage cannot be fixed once the slab is hard.
